Creamy Brie with Cranberry Sauce

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR a sweet-and-savory appetizer for a holiday party or special meal? This is the one. It's always a hit, and it's a good way to use up leftover cranberry sauce from Thanksgiving. My friend Collette introduced me to this treat. She showed up at a potluck and popped it into the oven, and 10 minutes later there was a cluster of hungry people around a dish of molten cheese with sweet and bubbly cranberry sauce on top. Serve with small crackers, since this rich hors d'oeuvre is best eaten in small bites. • Serves 8

One 4- to 7-ounce round Brie cheese
⅓ cup homemade or store-bought whole-berry cranberry sauce
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar (light or dark)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon rum (optional)
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon orange zest
¼ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
Assorted crackers, for serving
