My mother used to bake a version of this bread in early summer. We enjoyed it hot from the oven with fresh butter and strawberry jam, homemade with berries from her patch...a tradition I now share with my own children.
2-1/2 c. water
1 T. active dry yeast
1 T. sugar
1 T. salt
7 c. all-purpose flour, divided
1/4 to 1/2 c. butter, softened and divided
