Basic Asian Broiled Tofu Recipe

2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 pound medium *carrots, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, then in half again width wise
14 ounces firm or extra-firm tofu, sliced into 1-inch-by-2-inch rectangles
1 green onion, sliced thinly on the bias
1 teaspoon rice vinegar
1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
Steamed white or brown rice, for serving
