Creme brulee french toast

1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons corn syrup (feel free to leave this out if you're not a fan, as it barely impacts the recipe)
1 loaf of challah or brioche
5 large eggs
1 1/2 cups half-and-half
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract (or Grand Marnier, if you prefer orange flavor)
1/4 teaspoon salt
