Phil's Braised Short Ribs

This recipe is surprisingly easy and tasty.  The trick is cooking it in broth for over two hours, until the meat falls off the bone.


  • Short ribs
  • carrots, chopped
  • onions, chopped
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • olive oil


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees farenheit
  2. On a burner, heat braising pan on medium-high heat.  Add 1 tbsp olive oil
  3. Season short ribs with salt and pepper, then place in the braising pan and brown short ribs on all sides
  4. Remove ribs and set aside
  5. Lower heat on the braising pan.  Add 1 tbsp olive oil, carrots, onions. Saute for 5 minutes.
  6. Add chicken broth and wine to carrots and onions.
  7. Bring to simmer.  Cover and place in the oven for 2 1/2 hours.  Rotate meat ever 30-45 minutes.  After 2 hours, the meat should fall off the bone.
  8. Remove ribs.  Strain juice.  Remove fat from juice.
  9. Heat broiler to 500 degrees
  10. Place ribs and strained juice in pan. Place in brolier for 10 minutes.  Pour juice on meat every 3-4 minutes to get nice dark finish.
