Post-Partum Bran Muffins

6 cups bran (I used store brand all bran)
2 cups boiling water
4 cups buttermilk
1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
5 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
5 cups flour

cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg (to taste)

Optional add-ins:
- raisins
- blueberries
- chopped apples
- chopped pears
- walnuts
- pecans
- chocolate chips
- cranberries

Pour 2 c. BOILING water over bran.
Add 1 QUART buttermilk
Let bran/water/buttermilk mixture stand for 20 minutes.

In a separate bowl cream shortening and sugar.  Add eggs, baking soda, salt, mix well...

Add bran mixture

slowly add ... STIR, do not beat!

Put in muffin cups and bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.

Makes about five dozen muffins (~125+ calories each)

The batter that is left will keep in the refrigerator for two weeks...
