Pumpkin Pudding Cake with Fresh Nutmeg Sauce


For the cake:
1 2/3 c. flour
1 ½ c. sugar
¼ t. baking powder
1 t. baking soda
¼ t. salt
½ t. cinnamon
¼ t. ground cloves
1/3 c. shortening, softened
1/3 c. water
1/3 c. chopped walnuts (optional)
1 14oz. can pumpkin puree
1 large egg

For the Sauce:
¼ c. butter
½ c. sugar
1 egg yolk
1 ½ T. flour
1 t. vanilla
1 ¼ c. boiling water
¼ t. nutmeg
