Savory Slow Cooker Brisket

For my first attempt, I substituted beer for water.

Ingredients: 

4-6 lb brisket
10 garlic cloves, peeled
3 onions, sliced
3 bay leaves
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
3/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp cayenne
1 tbsp cornstarch or potato starch - optional (use potato starch for Ashkenazi Passover)
Slow cooker, large skillet, immersion blender
