Ham bone with still some meat on it
Several chunks of ham meat (approx 4 oz each)
1 lb dried split peas
1 whole onion (diced)
1 12 oz bag of fresh baby carrots (sliced to 1/4")
2 whole bay leaves
2 whole cloves of garlic
Salt & pepper for your taste
Cornstarch & water for thickening

  1. Bone out a cooked ham, but not too cleanly, leaving a good amount of meat still on the bone.
  2. In addition, cut several large chunks of ham meat, each chunk around the size of 2 decks of cards (4-5 oz. each)
  3. Place the ham bone(s) and the chunks of ham meat into a large pot.
  4. Rinse thoroughly the lb. of split peas and add to the pot
  5. Fill the pot with enough water to cover the ham & split peas
  6. Dice the onion and add to the pot
  7. Peel the two cloves of garlic and add to the pot
  8. Add the two whole bay leaves to the pot
  9. Bring to a boil and make sure there is enough water to cover everything (add water when necessary)
  10. Turn down the heat to low and continue cooking until the meat falls off the bone
  11. Remove the ham bones and ham chunks
  12. Remove any remaining meat off the bones and shred the ham chunks with 2 forks
  13. Put the ham meat aside to be added later
  14. Add the sliced baby carrots to the pot
  15. Continue cooking until the carrots are tender
  16. Add the ham meat back into the pot
  17. Taste and season with salt & pepper to your liking
  18. Add a mixture of cornstarch & water to thickenĀ
  19. Serve with fresh baked bread
