Vanilla Bean Birthday Cake

makes 2 9-inch or 3 8-inch cake layers
For the cake:
3 1/2 cups (325 grams) sifted cake flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks/227 grams) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 (300 grams) cups granulated sugar
6 large egg whites
1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste
1 1/3 cups (320 ml) whole milk, at room temperature
For the frosting:
1 pound (4 sticks)(454 g) unsalted butter
4 cups confectioners sugar (500 g), sifted
1 tablespoon (15 ml) vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
3-4 tablespoons (45 ml) heavy cream or milk
1-2 drops food coloring (I used Americolor Soft Pink)
