This recipe was given to me by my Granny Mann when I first began learning to bake. She was the closest I had to a grandparent growing up, since both sets of grandparents lived out of town.
1 c. sugar
1/3 c. shortening
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c. milk
1 t. vanilla extract
1-1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. baking soda
1 t. salt
2 c. apples, cored, peeled and chopped
Garnish: additional sugar
