Fresh Apple Bread

I believe I got this recipe from my dear friend Mary Turner, but I didn't write it on the recipe card so I'm not sure!
Anyway, I used to make this recipe every fall way back when, but I don't think I've made it since Skylar was born!

2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups chopped, peeled apples
1/2 cup chopping nuts (optional)
1 tsp vanilla

  1. Sift or mix dry ingredients together. Set aside
  2. Cream shortening and sugar with a mixer
  3. Add eggs and beat well
  4. Stir in apples, nuts and vanilla
  5. Mix in dry ingredients to the apple mixture.
  6. Pour batter into a greased bread pan.
  7. Sprinkle top with 1/4 cup sugar and 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon mixed together
  8. Bake at 350 for 1 hour.
  9. Remove from oven and turn pan on it's side to cool.
  10. Don't slice until cool.
  11. Store in refrigerator.
