The name ‘red velvet’ has always fascinated me because of its namesakes in cakes and pancakes and waffles. You can try this simple vegan red velvet waffle. Use whole wheat flour instead of all purpose flour if you want it healthy. Whole wheat flour has much more fibres and other nutrients. Gluten-free flour can be another healthy option. Coconut oil can be used instead of butter and normal sugar can give way to cane sugar, turbinado sugar, or coconut sugar, or zero calorie sweetener.


Whole wheat flour - 1 cup
Baking powder - 1 Tsp
Liquid sweetener - 2 tbsp
Coconut oil, melted - 1 tbsp
A pinch of salt
Vegan milk - 1 cup
Vanilla extract - ½ tsp
Cocoa powder - 1 tbsp
Red food colour - 4 - 6 drops

Preheat the waffle iron and grease it with a little coconut oil.

In a bowl, add the dry ingredients whole wheat flour, baking powder, salt, cocoa powder and mix them thoroughly.
In another bowl, pour all the wet ingredients coconut oil, sweetener, vegan milk, food colour, and vanilla extract, and mix thoroughly using a whisk.

Add dry mix to the wet mix and stir well until the batter is thick but flowing.
Scoop batter into each section of the waffle iron and level off evenly.

Close the iron and cook it for around 3-4 minutes, until the waffle turns deep red and crisp on the outside. Use remaining batter for more waffles.
