1/2 cup regular barley
1 cup chopped onion (1 large)
3/4 cup chopped carrots
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons ground cumin
4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth

1/2 cup lentils, rinsed and drained
1 bay leaf
