Roasted Sweet Tamari Sesame Almonds

Notes:

Around 11 and 4, I usually always want a snack. More often than not, this used to be the cakes and biscuits out in the office kitchen. Nowadays, its these almonds.

Almonds are packed with healthy fats, antioxidants and vitamin E. They’ll help keep you fuller for longer and stave off hunger pangs. Sesame seeds are packed with minerals like magnesium, iron, vitamin B1 and also contain a healthy dose of dietary fibre.

These almonds are great as a portable snack or to sprinkle on salads. They’re so easy to make and the best thing is that they’re so delicious that you won’t feel like you’re missing out on any of the naughty foods.

They last about a week in a sealed, airtight container – I keep a small jar of these on my desk to avoid any running to the vending machine.

On another note, apparently lots of offices are pushing to make vending machines healthier – I came to work to find a leaflet on my desk letting me know the minstrels in the vending machine will now be replaced with a galaxy bar. I wasn’t sure how to react?! Are galaxy bars inherently healthier than minstrels? WHY? How many should I be eating a day?!

Has anyone else spotted this kind of madness in their office?

Ingredients:

150g raw, unsalted almonds
40g sesame seeds
1 tsp chilli powder or cayenne pepper
2 tbsp agave nectar or honey
2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce

  1. Mix together the sesame seeds, chilli powder, agave nectar and tamari.
  2. Stir well to combine.
  3. Add in the almonds and mix to coat.
  4. Spread the almonds on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  5. If any of the sesame agave mixture is left in the bowl, that fine – you can drizzle it over the almonds once they’ve roasted.
  6. Bake the mixture in the oven at 250 degrees centigrade for 20 minute.
  7. Remove from the oven and mix in any remaining sesame agave mixture.
  8. Store, once cooled, in a sealed airtight container.
  9. Enjoy!
