It’s grown widely across the Mediterranean region and represents an integral part of their local cuisine. Known for its peppery, savoury taste, its leaves are commonly added raw or cooked to pasta, pizza and various mixed salads. The arugula originates in the region covering Northwest India, Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan and western provinces of China. Subsequently arugula was cultivated by the Romans who ascribed it with aphrodisiac properties. The early Roman Catholic Church knew about this and later prohibited the cultivation of the roqueta (i.e. rocket) within monastery walls.
