Caramel French Toast

Ingredients: 

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup brown sugar
2 Tablespoon light corn syrup
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2 %)
1/4 teaspoon salt
12 slices white sandwich bread or thick sliced French bread, like Texas Toast


  1. Combine butter, brown sugar, and syrup in saucepan.  Melt together over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly.
  2. Pour thickened mixture into a 9 X 13 glass casserole dish.  Place bread on top of mixture.  
  3. Combine eggs, milk, vanilla, and salt.  Pour over bread.  Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight.
  4. Uncover and Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.  If cooking 2 or more casseroles add 15-20 minutes extra time to cook. Watch carefully so as not to burn.  
  5. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and/or cinnamon.  (You could also put a can of apple pie filling in bottom of greased pan with bread on top and then add the custard egg mixture for a different variation.)
