Haystacks: The Not-Especially-Christmasy Christmas Treat

Every year, right around now, my mom would take a break from raising five kids to make a few batches of these clusters of chocolate, chopped walnuts, and chow-mein noodles. There's nothing especially Christmasy about them, and even she doesn't know why she only made them once a year, but they were our Christmas treats, and she made them because we loved them. I may not believe in Santa Claus or the Virgin birth, but I believe in these things.
The Recipe:
Melt one 6-oz package semisweet chocolate morsels and one 6-oz package butterscotch chips together in a double boiler over low heat. Let mixture cool before folding in a half-cup coarsely chopped walnuts and a 3-oz can chow-mein noodles. (You can also add coconut flakes, miniature marshmallows, or M&Ms.) Drop by tablespoonfuls onto a cookie sheet and refrigerate until hard.
