1 pound carrots, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks
1 pound potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese (4 ounces)
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Toasted rye or pumpernickel bread
