Molasses Cookies

Notes:

This was a recipe of my mother's, another one she would not share with anyone. It is always a huge hit with everyone who tries it.

Ingredients:

1 stick of butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark molasses (we also use sorghum)
1 egg
2 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/2 cup granulated sugar for rolling cookie in

  1. For crisp cookies, melt Butter in a sauce pan. For chewy cookies, like I prefer simply soften butter and then cream into sugar.
  2. In large bowl (or mixer) mix sugar, butter & molasses
  3. Blend well then add egg and continue to mix.
  4. Slow add the remaining ingredients.
  5. Place in plastic wrap and chill for 3 hours
  6. Roll into 1' balls and roll in sugar
  7. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes.
