Get Started - 100% free to try - join in 30 secondsGot this recipe from a co-worker when I was a newlywed in 1955. At the top of the card I had written "Bill's favorite". Probably because I had not burned them and he was hungry. :-) But they are a good cookie.
1 cup soft shortening (half butter - I use margarine)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 cups sifted enriched flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
Cream shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla together until fluffy. Sift cream of tartar, soda, salt, and flour together. Stir into creamed mixture and mix to a moderately stiff dough. Using about a Tbs. of dough for each cookie, roll dough into balls and dip in granulated sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. DO NOT FLATTEN! Bake at 350 till golden brown. About 10 minutes.
