½ vanilla bean, seeds scraped out

½ cup sugar

1 cup flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

¼ cup whole milk

1 egg

Soup
6 egg yolks (or ½ cup of pasteurized egg yolks--available at most supermarkets)

⅓ cup sugar

1 vanilla bean, seeds scraped out

4¼ cups buttermilk

2 cups kefir

1 cup heavy cream

Juice and zest of one and a half lemons

Berries (optional)
