Candy Cane Cookies

1 cup icing sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
2 tsp almond extract
2 1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 tsp red food coloring (only applied to half of dough)

  1. Combine all ingredients, except food coloring.  Mix to create a cookie dough
  2. Split cookie dough evenly into two halves
  3. Set aside one half (to remain a white color), and add red food coloring to the other half.
  4. Roll each half into a rectangular sheet of equal size, then place one directly over the other.
  5. Roll the stacked sheets of dough, wrap the roll in plastic wrap, and refridgerate.
  6. Once dough is cool and firm, remove plastic wrap and slice roll into individual cookies
  7. Bake at 350F for 9 minutes, or until right before they start browing
