1 cup cream
1 cup milk
1 tbs butter
1 clove garlic
salt to taste
black pepper to taste
pinch of nutmeg
1/3 pound gruyere cheese
Peel potatoes and put in water so it doesn't turn black.
Preheat oven to 350F
Prepare 28x20 cm glass oven-ready container (or something of similar size)
Rub the bottom and sides of baking container with the clove of garlic.
Rub the bottom and sides of baking container with butter.
In a separete container, mix together milk and cream. Bring to a boil.
Pour a portion of the cream mixture into baking container - just enough to cover the entire base.
Salt & pepper the baking container, add a dash of nutmeg.
Cut potatoes into 3mm slices.
Put a layer of potato slices onto the bottom of the baking container so that each edge slightly overlaps with the one next to it like roof shingles.
Add a layer of cheese on top of this.
Salt, pepper and nutmeg again.
Repeat with further layers of potatoes, cheese, salt, pepper & nutmeg until all potatoes used.
Finish off by making the top layer one of cheese.
Bake for about an hour until potatoes acquire a golden tinge.
