Red Devil's Food Cake

Ingredients: 

2 1/2 C flour
3/4 C cocoa
1 C lard & butter
2 C sugar
2 eggs
3/4 C buttermilk
1 1/4 t soda
2 t vanilla
3/4 C boiling water


  1. Sift the flour, then measure.
  2. Resift twice with cocoa
  3. Cream fat until plastic
  4. Then add the sugar gradually, creaming throughly
  5. Add the well beaten eggs and beat hard one minute
  6. Add the flour and cocoa mixture alternately with the buttermilk in which soda had been dissolved by beginning and ending with the flour mixture
  7. Add the vanilla and beat vigorously 1/2 minute
  8. Add the boiling water (the water must be boiling to make the cake red)
  9. Stir until the batter is smooth
  10. Turn into layer or loaf pans with sides oiled and bottoms lined with paraffin paper.
  11. Bake at 350* for about 35 minutes
